The Sidebands channel was originally intended for short posts outside the normal path of discussion. My conception was of random or passing thoughts that weren’t meaty enough for a “real” post.
That idea didn’t last long — many Sidebands were as long as the regular posts. What remains is that they are (for the most part) about topics outside of the normal fare. By around #40, “outside” came to be defined as “especially technical or geeky” and that is where Sidebands have settled. They’re a chance for me to express my more mathematical and technical interests. (Granted, the line between my normal interests and my über-geeky interests is a fuzzy one at best.)
The new channel, Brain Bubbles, is the venue currently charged with the pithy posts, although many of those are awfully long, too. Brevity isn’t in my bailiwick.
