Happy Anniversary to my Mom & Dad!
They’ve been married for 64 years!!
Pretty amazing in this day and age!

Thanks to them, I know that long-term true love is possible. (Not that I’ve found it (yet), mind you, but I know it is possible!)
So drink a toast to my ‘Rents!!
Way. To. Go!

Yep, and they’re still together… for an odd definition of together. Dad’s in the final stages of Alzheimer’s. Both are in a seniors’ home, but in separate quarters. Mom’s still sharp, although increasingly frail. Dad needs constant care and is pretty much gone mentally. But she visits him on most days, and on the good days he recognizes her.

Ooh, I didn’t know that…
But it’s calming to learn they’re still together and have made it this far. And that he somehow recognizes her on good days. It reminds me of the movie “The Notebook.” It’s one of the very few movies that made me cry.

Yes, it’s quite an accomplishment. And their marriage was always a very good one. My sister and I never heard them ever fight, and there was a lot of love in our household. It definitely provided a data point at one end of the spectrum. Possibly even too idealistic of one, but it’s good to know what is possible in love and life. It has a lot to do with acceptance and commitment. Sadly I never found anyone capable of having those with me, but I’m privileged to have seen it in my parents!
