Today the merry, merry month of May has its final appearance in locations worldwide. If you managed to miss all 31 shows you’re out of luck for the remainder of the season and will have to wait until it hits the road for the 2016 tour. (Hint: order your tickets now; they go fast.)
It’s been a slightly strange month in Minnesota. Temperatures have shown strong indicators towards summer, but winter’s chill has been persistent. Last night’s low was 44 degrees (Fahrenheit), and it’s only 66 degrees here late in the afternoon.
Even the deer are acting strange!

This blog is nearly four years old (I started on July 4th, 2011). This post makes it exactly 500 posts here on Logos Con Carne. To commemorate it, I’m giving myself the 500 Odometer Award (which I built myself from various electrons I had laying around).
As part of the party, this post consists of miscellaneous odds and ends that have intrigued me lately. I’ll leave it to you to decide which are the odds and which are the ends.

I don’t reblog very often (in fact, I don’t believe I’ve ever reblogged a post by someone else). But this is so much more important than movies or science fiction or baseball. Please take a moment to read charmarie221’s humbling post. Life… is a hell of a thing.

This month there is a big focus on Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) with the culmination being Global Awareness Day today, May 15th, and a campaign to hear all of the stories at #IAMTSC.
I don’t know that I’ve ever consciously thought of the disease as a Global Issue, although obviously it is as the numbers reveal that it affects people everywhere. I’ve thought of it in the National sense because we’ve lived in different states and have had different experiences with doctors and clinics and support groups and schools, all of which have had varying experiences with the condition. I receive publications and information from the National Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance. And I’ve thought of it locally when we’ve taken part in the Step Forward To Cure TSC which is a fundraiser in the form of a Walk in Frisco (as well as many other cities nationwide) each year…

So is there any legitimate food you absolutely cannot see being on a pizza? I don’t mean one you’d necessarily eat. I mean one that someone somewhere would eat. Is there anything, that if put on a pizza would result in everyone rejecting it?
Ideally, is there a combo that would make anyone a little queasy? I ask because I need a new go-to phrase for horrific food combinations. I’ve been using “onion root beer” for too long. (I always liked that one because root beer was my favorite soda as a kid.)
So, what just doesn’t go on pizza? Ever. In any reality.

Terry Pratchett, 1948-2015, RIP
My mom died a year ago today. Yesterday I attended a memorial service for my best friend’s mom, who died this past February. Also in February, Leonard Nimoy took a final bow and exited stage left. Most recently — just last Thursday — another star went out, and it was one that shone brilliantly in the sky for so many of us.
Sir Terry Pratchett finally got to meet one of his key characters. I like to think that, for him, it might have been like meeting an old friend — and sadly, a visitor he’s been expecting for quite a while now. We fans know that Death personally attends the passing of wizards.
And Terry Pratchett was a wizard beyond compare.

There is an old saying about March coming in like a lion (and going out like a lamb). The reverse is also imagined: if it comes in like a lamb, it will go out like a lion. Weather mythology aside, March does have some significant dates for me.
One is “Vern’s Equal Ox” — a day of rejoicing for Lovers of the Light. Our days will now be longer than our nights. That’s less than two weeks away. The coming Saturday is a doubly special date (especially this year), but more about that another day. Lastly, March contains the birthday of one of the four people I consider life-long best friends.
Trumping it all right now: last night I had my first fully lucid dream!

A whale of a tale.
Somewhere out in the Pacific Ocean swims what is said to be the loneliest whale in the world. He (or she, but here I’m going to assume he) is known as the 52-hertz whale. That designation comes from the sound of his whale song, which has a much higher pitch than any known species fitting his migratory pattern.
His calls were first heard by Woods Hole in 1989 and again in 1990 and 1991. His cries have been detected every season since 2004. His movements (he’s been tracked, but never seen) don’t match blue or fin whales any more than his cries do. One theory is that he was born deaf and never learned to sing like others of his species.
All of which gives me a real affinity for the poor guy!

Once I’ve decided that I like something, I tend to be pretty loyal. That’s even more the case when it comes to people. But hate is very close to love; both are very strong and persistent emotions — they just have opposite polarities. The true opposite of love (or hate) is indifference.
And it does happen that, sometimes a single event that gets on the wrong side of me instantly flips the polarity of my feeling. Sadly, it’s always been from positive to negative. I’ve never had the movie experience of hating and then loving.
Recently two things have flipped my switch, and a third one is tugging at it.

Today is the last Day of Christmas. If you’ve been following the song, your house is filled with leaping Lords, milking maids, two groups of musicians, and an awful lot of birds. But now you can usher them out, take down the lights and decorations, and put the tree out on the curb for pickup.
I’m guessing some of you did the de-decorating on December 26th and didn’t even buy your true love a partridge. On the other hand, the 2015 Christmas season apparently begins on August 31st (and includes “Black November”), so it’ll be back before you know it!
Until then, it’s time to get back to the grindstone.
