Protest Signs #6

Which on the face of it seems hard to understand. Aren’t we past all that?

The reaction to Obama at the time, and the lingering effects persist. As ignorant and sickening as it is, our country is still deeply racist, both subtly and overt.

My fear is that, in their secret heart-of-hearts, Republican politicians are gleefully rubbing their hands thinking, “Maybe this is it! Maybe we can finally have a good old-fashioned White Nationalist American!”

I’m pretty sure a lot of Republicans are, but it would be nice to think their leaders have more sense. John McCain famously instructed one of his ignorant followers during his campaign. (A Minnesotan, I’m ashamed to say. See below.)

It appears those days are over, and the Republican party has given itself in to racism, nationalism, greed, heartlessness to the point of cruelty, and stunning ignorance.

As Childish Gambino put it, “This is America.”

It was Lakeville, Minnesota during the 2008 campaign. First, one of McCain’s supporters expressed “fear” of Obama. McCain responded:

“I have to tell you: He is a decent person and a person you don’t have to be scared of as president of the United States.”

(Boy, have times changed!)

Next came the woman who said Obama was an “Arab,” to which McCain responded:

“No, ma’am. He’s a decent family man, citizen, that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues, and that’s what this campaign is all about.”

(Boy, have times changed!)

“R. E. S. P. E. C. T.”

Remember when that existed?
