Cruising SF Movies

Whatever you think about Tom Cruise the person, it’s hard to dispute that Tom Cruise the actor has turned out a lot of very worthwhile films. It’s hard to find many duds in his filmography but easy to spot noteworthy titles. Ever since Risky Business (1983) and Top Gun (1986), Tom Cruise has starred in movies so memorable that they became part of our cultural lingo.

More importantly for this Sci-Fi Saturday post, Tom Cruise has appeared in a perhaps surprising number of science fiction movies. Even more importantly, nearly all of them are good science fiction movies. Some of them are even really good.

Unfortunately, one of his rare duds is among them.

Now Appearing

Now showing at the Heaven’s Gate Theatre:

Bacall’s famous line from To Have and Have Not is the all-time sexiest line in movie history! “You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve? You just put your lips together — and blow.”

My reaction matches Bogie’s every time! Hoooo-eeee!!

And at the Heavenly Comedy Club:

But tickets to these shows… are a little tricky to come by. On the other hand, you have plenty of time to get there and see them. They run every night (with matinees on weekends) … forever!

13 – 31 = Beer

I wrote in last night’s post that I had a bet riding on today’s college football game between the Minnesota Gophers and the Iowa Hawkeyes. That’s particularly weird, since: (a) I generally never gamble, especially on sports; (2) when it comes to football, I’m pretty much a “Superbowl-only” kind of guy; and (iii) I know nothing about college football [apparently a bronze pig, named Floyd, is involved somehow].

Well, weak from the week, I crashed on the couch all morning and missed most of the game. But I did wake up in time to catch the final 58 seconds (actually a rather long time in football). Final score: Minnesota 13, Iowa 31. That means my former boss and I get beer! [Yes, that’s right, I was betting on Iowa.]

Last night I mentioned it was a long story that I’d tell you later. What I didn’t mention was that it involves a great Humphrey Bogart movie, rotary phones, a prolonged discussion of point spreads and a parody of a famous quote.
